MILF fighters to be decommissioned today

COTABATO CITY - President Duterte is scheduled to attend the decommissioning ceremony of Moro Islamic Liberation.

The event will be held at the old provincial capitol complex of Maguindanao in Simuay, Sultan Kudarat town.

Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) interim Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim, who is also MILF chieftain, will welcome the presidential party and members of the international community Naguib Sinarimbo told The Manila Bulletin.

Marine troops have since Monday been seen manning checkpoints on roads leading to the venue.

All hoteels including ordinary lodging-houses here have been fully booked for Saturday's rites.

Members of the Joint Peace and Security Team (JPST), comprising former MILF combatants, police and military contingents, will guard the venue. They belong to the first batch of 219 MILF ex-fighters trained together with police and military counterpart to secure activities in BARMM, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) said.

At least 1,060 former MILF fighters are expected to turn over 920 assorted high-powered firearms, including crew-served machineguns, mortar and shoulder-mounted rocket launchers, said Sinarimbo, who is BARMM spokesperson and minister of Interior and Local Government.

The arms will be handed over to the International Decommissioning Body (IDB), said OPAPP Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.

IDB chair Ambassador Fatih Ulosoy arrived here to witness the signing of a memorandum of agreement on Firday between Galvez and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Director General Isidro Lapena.

The proposed agreement directs TESDA to provide technical and skills training for the MILF ex-fighters. END
